Guidelines for Student Behavior

Due to our belief that each student is a unique individual with different personal, social, and educational needs, every disciplinary situation becomes unique in nature.  Rules in our classrooms are few.  Effective discipline involves a few overriding beliefs, rather than a long list of specific rules.  Situations are dealt with as they arise, with the focus on enabling the child to grow and learn from his or her actions. 

Class Rules

-You may engage in any behavior which does not create a problem for you or anyone else in the world. 

-If you find yourself with a problem, you may solve it by any means which does not cause a problem for anyone else in the world. 

-You may engage in any behavior that does not jeopardize the safety or learning of yourself or others.  Unkind words and actions will not be tolerated.

 

In ensuring that the above guidelines are adhered to, we will operate with the following principles as our guide:

 

We will guide students toward personal responsibility and the decision√making skills they will need to function in the real world.  Equal is not always fair.  Consequences will be designed to fit the problems of individual students, and they may be different even when problems appear to be the same. 

We will make every effort to ensure that, in each situation, the students involved understand why they are involved and why they are receiving their consequences. 

If, we, at any time act or react in a way that a child truly feels is unjust, that student need only say to us, ≥I≠m not sure that≠s fair.≈  We will arrange a private conference, during which the student can express why he or she feels an action was not fair.  This may or may not change the course of action.  We are always open to calm, rational discussion of any matter. 

Please realize that certain situations may be referred to front office personnel. 

 

To ensure a productive learning environment, a TIME-OUT may be needed to help redirect the student≠s behavior.

·        The student will be asked to leave the classroom to a buddy-room where they will need to reflect on why they were asked to leave the room. This reflection period may be in the form of a written assignment or simply a reflection that takes place internally.

·        The time the student is gone will be based on teacher discretion.  The student will need to return either when the teacher requests they return, or when they feel they have spent an adequate amount of time reflecting on their behavior and are ready to return to the classroom and be a productive participant.

·         Students who return to class and are asked to leave AGAIN within the same class period will be assigned an automatic after-school detention.  If this happens to your child, the teacher who has experienced the problem will assign the detention.  Detentions are held after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30.  There is no bus provided at this time.  It will be your responsibility as the parent/guardian to either pick up your child or allow them to walk/ride their bike home.  After school detention forms are due back to the assigning teacher within two days of being assigned.  If the form is NOT returned in the appropriate time frame, an office referral may be issued for non-compliance. 

Some behaviors may warrant an automatic after school detention. Examples may include, but are not limited to:

Ø     rough housing

Ø     gum chewing

Ø     insubordination (not following class rules or doing work)

Ø     disrespect towards teacher

Ø     bullying

Ø     texting/using cell phones during class or in the bathroom

Ø     not being in class at the scheduled time (ie: hanging out in the hallway/taking your time to get to Specials)

We expect all students in class to:

-respect the learning environment

-write legibly

-participate in all class assignments/discussions/activities

-take notes when necessary

-complete all work on time

-treat teachers and other students with respect

Some Annoying but Necessary REMINDERS-à

Gum Chewing:  As per Stetson Hills≠ School policy, chewing gum is not allowed on campus.  If a student is chewing gum, they will be asked to dispose of it and will be asked to turn in their pack of gum. It is up to each teacher to determine the consequence for gum chewing. Repeat offenders will be issued an after school detention each time they are caught with gum. 

Dress Code:  Please refer to the dress code guidelines in the student handbook.  We realize that in the summer months, as well as towards the end of the school year, it gets VERY hot.  Tank tops and shorts are a staple in a female middle-school student≠s wardrobe, we understand this, however, if a tank top is too skimpy/shows too much of what we don≠t need to see, your child may be sent to the nurse with a dress code violation.  This may also happen if shorts are too short.  A good rule of thumb is:  if you can touch skin with your fingertips when you hold them at the base of your shorts they are TOO short!!! Pajamas and slippers are not to be worn unless it is a specified spirit day.  Hats may be worn, but are to be removed when entering ANY school building.  Teachers should not have to remind students of this rule.  If your child≠s hat becomes a problem or a play toy, it may be confiscated and require pick up by a parent/guardian.  If the problem persists, your child may be asked to give their hat to their first hour teacher at the beginning of the day and may pick it up after the last school bell rings.

CELL PHONES:  We are a new generation of techies as such, the rules have evolved.  Cell phones are part of most students≠ outfits these days, and teachers are much the same.  Though we recognize that cell phones are provided to children as a safety device, we must enforce strict policies in regards to the use of cell phones during school hours and in class.  Many unfortunate circumstances have occurred as a result of a student and their camera phones.  *Cell phones are to be turned OFF (not on vibrate/silence) during school hours!*

If your child is caught using their cell phone during school hours/class, the phone will be confiscated and will require parent/guardian pick up from the front office. <o:p></o:p>

They also may receive an after school detention depending on the circumstances of the situation.

I-Pods and MP3 Players:  These devices are not to be used during school hours and should not be brought to school.  Unfortunately, theft happens, so it is best to leave valuables like these at home.  If a student loses/misplaces/has stolen from them a valuable item like these, it is their responsibility as they are not supposed to be on campus. 

Other items that should not be brought to school:

~       Energy drinks (Monster, Kronik, Red Bull, etc.)

~       Scented sprays (Axe, Tag, body splashes, and perfumes)

~       Laser pointer pens

(If your child is caught with one of these items, they may be confiscated and require parent/guardian pick up)        

Procedures:

Websites: 

All seventh grade teachers have a website.  Please refer to the last page of this packet for specific website addresses.  We recommend saving these addresses on your favorites at your home and work computers in order to stay up to speed with your child≠s education.  Websites are updated weekly with announcements, class assignments (including homework for the week), as well as other important information you may need to know. 

Absences:

We recognize that children get sick, need to go to appointments, and go on vacations during the school year.  Teachers also have these obligations.  Please understand that we have over 120 students in a given school year.  This is a lot of paperwork and records to keep, therefore we request that students take full responsibility for making up any missing work during a scheduled/unscheduled absence.  Many parents/students request work ahead of time.  In the event that a teacher has planned in advance, this work may be able to be given to the student to complete during their absence.  Keep in mind that most class lessons are based upon the prior day≠s lesson and the flow of the lesson, so your child≠s teacher may not always have work ready in advance. 

It is safe to assume that in the event of an absence, your child will make up any work missed upon their RETURN to school.  Additionally, teachers are not required to send work up to the office for an absent child until they have missed at least 3 days.  If a teacher feels it would be more beneficial for a student to receive this work sooner, they may gather the work together. 

Please understand that we plan our lessons based on the amount of time we have each day with your children and class disruptions to gather work for children that are absent can be incredibly distracting.  Students are given 2 days for every 1 day they are absent to make up work.  We are very understanding of absences as long as your child comes back to school ready to get any work missed from a classmate and complete that work in a timely fashion. PowerSchools:

We are officially an online gradebook school (YES!).  This means that you have access to your child≠s grades at any given time simply by accessing the Powerschools website and logging in.  You can view grades, assignments, comments, and even sign up for emailed progress reports.  We encourage you to access your child≠s Powerschool account on a weekly basis and HIGHLY recommend signing up for emailed progress reports.  This is the best way to remain connected to your child≠s continued education.  We also encourage children to access their Powerschools account and have progress reports emailed to them.  We are unable to print progress reports on the new system!

Parent/Teacher Conferences:

Conferences take place during first and third quarter.  We will send home notification if we require a scheduled conference for your child and we will also offer open conference times during both the October and March conference times. 

Students with a grade of D or F in any class will require a conference.

Late Work Policy:

It is our goal that your child comprehend the standards we are teaching in our classroom lessons.  With these lessons, there will be class work and occasionally homework assignments.  It is expected that students use their class time as the appropriate time to complete given work.  In the event that the class period is not an adequate amount of time for student≠s to complete this work, they may need to take it home and finish this work as homework.  It is expected that when a teacher sits down to input grades, all students will have turned in their assignments. 

In the event that a teacher inputs grades and your child≠s assignment is not present, your child≠s assignment will be considered late (absent students have 2 days for every one day they were absent before assignments will be deemed late).

Grading will be affected as follows:

Any unexcused late work will have 10% of the total points deducted for each day that it is late up to 50% off.  No late work will be accepted after two weeks from the due date.

                        

*Helpful Hint: It is a good idea to hang on to all work (graded and ungraded) until the end of each quarter.  This will allow discrepancies in grades or questions to be easily clarified.

Bathroom Policy:

Your child will be given a bathroom log to be used during the school day.  The log will note the time the student is going to the bathroom and their return time.  We use this information in the event of an emergency or if we need to track behavior that may have taken place during the time a child was in the restroom. They will be allowed to class time restroom breaks during the day.  It is requested that students attempt to use the restroom before school starts and during lunch.
